Social Capital and Participation

One of the tensions in development is that it fundamentally involves people cooperating at larger and larger scales in all four domains of the development transformation–economic, political, administrative and social–and this involves tensions between previous ways of doing things that were more personal and new ways that are intended to be more based on arm’s length, rule-mediated, impersonal cooperation. The two areas of research are about social capital and about participation of beneficiaries in projects.
